A year of dance. Just the way I like it.

A year of dance. Just the way I like it.

What are you waiting for?

While in New York City for the Limón intensive I went to @safespacemanhattan to watch @eleanor_panico do her thing (sing!) and ended up improv-ing a little dance for five strangers. Every (tiny) space and audience is worthy because every person is hungry for beauty. Bless the people in front of you in the ways you can, while you can.

**Instagram muted the audio— it’s Bring Him Home from Les Mis!

How did it all start? #preludetogenesis1

|| Bryant‘s original delivery of the full poem from 2015 now on YouTube with subtitles. LINK IN BIO. ||

In 2012, I walked into Bryant Russ’ classroom for the first time as a freshman at Lansing Christian School.
In 2015, Bryant shared his original poem Prelude to Genesis 1 in chapel at Holland Christian.
In 2017, I discovered the video of him sharing the poem. I was astounded and immediately wrote him a letter. A few weeks later I got his reply in the mail 🥹
In 2019 (give or take), I emailed him about putting the poetry on stage. He gave the most open-handed yes. I’m still amazed at his generosity and trust.
In 2023 (maybe earlier?), I began piecing together the score around the poetry.
In 2025, I made my final major edit to the score in July and the show premiered in August.

Bryant currently serves as the Director of Faith Formation at Holland Christian schools in Michigan. He’s also the father to five girls! If you were moved by his poetry, drop him an encouraging line in the comments, and I’ll be sure to pass it on.

Some moments from #preludetogenesis1

These artists are wholehearted, and I hope these photos gives those of you who couldn’t come a glimpse into that.

& shoutout to my incredible (Insta-less) lighting designer Katarina Larson!

Look for a post featuring the poetry soon…

MADE POSSIBLE BY ➡️➡️

It feels impossible that so many of you willingly followed me on this crazed journey. Just, thank you. Thank you so, so, soo much.

It was an epic, strenuous joy to bring Prelude to Genesis 1 to life. To do in a significant way with art what I have always dreamt of doing with art…and to see that it actually works — it truly makes the immense challenges of a dance career worth it.

Shoutout to @madvonb for making the trip from Michigan. Thank you for bringing so much wonder & laughter into my life, and for modeling gritty faith.

The most challenging part of this project will always be LIVING it: choosing to engage with God and life in the midst of hugely significant, unresolved questions. My own questions for God, centered around hell, remain overwhelming and panic-inducing. At the same time, God‘s own voluntary suffering continues to demand pause—and I live in that pause. My hope is that this show help us all be more honest about the massive tensions we live in.

I believe this show is far from over. If you’re interested in helping bring this work to new audiences, or if you have a particular audience in mind, please reach out to me privately. It’s time to dream bigger dreams!

MEET THE ARTIST: Hannah Anderson

I saved a very special artist for last. Hannah was an original member of the cast, dancing a lead role. In July, she graciously made the difficult decision to step out of the show due to injury...and offered to step into the role of rehearsal director, which I desperately needed. Hannah‘s contributions to the process have been invaluable, and you will see her handprint all over the stage tonight! The beauty of her new role alongside the disappointment of stepping out of her old demonstrates the very tension this show is all about.

Swipe to learn more about Hannah and hear about the show in her own words!

Follow Hannah’s adventures @hannah.anderson.moves & @earthenimagemovement

Leading up to the show I’ll be introducing each of the artists performing in Prelude to Genesis 1. This show is only getting off the ground because of the quality of the people in the studio with me. Help me celebrate them in the comments!

👆what you see v. what I’m thinking👇

—What if I don’t finish in time?
—How can I possibly do this justice?
—Why did I commit to this?

Here’s the thing. I have reached the (expected) point in the creative process of…extreme stress. 🫣 The first two questions above: I don’t know. But the third question? I know, deep in my gut. Every day I have the (delightful, confusing, burdensome, curious) privilege of interacting with human beings and I remember: people are why. YOU are why.

What is your why?
