I choreographed my first work in 2015. Even then, I sensed the importance of being intentional. In the decade since, that sense has found its outworking in generosity toward my artists and audiences alike. I ask, “what do I have to give these people?”

I believe that before the stage is a space to speak, it is a space to listen. Therefore, I aim to create work that is cathartic before it is didactic. As a choreographer, I have the privilege of not only capturing a real thing in a new medium, but capturing an imagined thing. I want to offer the audience the gift of stepping outside themselves and considering this thing, real or imagined.

A guiding text for my hope in life is an exchange between Jesus and one of his disciples, Peter.  Jesus asks, “Do you want to leave, too?” And Peter responds, “To whom shall we go?” (paraphrase of John 6:68-69).  Like Peter, my hope is more often “in spite of” than “because.” That resilient hope is what I’m most driven to capture on stage.
